Scissors
If
you are a hairdresser, strain, pain, and injury to your wrist are
common side effects of the repetitive use of scissors. Constantly
twisting your wrist to get the right angle as you are cutting someone’s
hair can create injuries. Repetitive strain injury, like carpal
tunnel, can occur because of repetitive, improper scissor handling.
Here are some tips to help you reduce the risk of carpal tunnel:
Make sure the blades on your scissors are properly sharpened. If
they are dull, it is harder to cut hair, and also requires more
force, which puts more strain on your wrist.
-
Use a wrist brace to keep your wrist in a comfortable position.
It will help train you to lessen the amount of time spent twisting
your wrist.
-
Handles are important. Make sure the handles on your scissors
are ergonomically designed for the best comfort of your hand.
-
Take frequent breaks. It may not earn you money to take a break,
but it will help keep your ability to earn a living in the long
run.
-
Purchase a pair of swivel-thumb scissors. They swivel, so your
wrist doesn’t have to. The scissors may be a bit pricey,
but worth it.
-
If you have an appointment that will take more than a couple
of hours, try to schedule it for two days instead of one.
-
If you are feeling pain, consult your physician.
Having the right scissors and using the correct wrist positioning
can greatly reduce the risk of RSI, or repetitive strain injury,
like carpal tunnel. It is always a good idea to consult your physician
if you feel any pain that may be associated to your work. Repetitive
injuries are hard to treat, and the pain rarely ever goes away completely,
so the more you can reduce the risk the better off you will be in
the future.
